Crying for four seasons is a modern Chinese dance collaboration between me and Goldsmith Univeristy, the well-known Chinese dancer Ma Jiaolong of Beijing Dance Academy, and the team of Chinese national first-class actor Zhi Bo Zhao in 2022. Performed in Paradise Augstine at the London and Edinburgh Fringe festivals, and received high box office and good reviews. In the project, as a lighting engineer and media designer, I designed the atmosphere of the stage according to the direction of the dance and the plot.
The choreography of Crying for four season is inspired by Chinese poetry, and based on the logic of western choreography, combined with the Chinese "Qi" dance movement mode, the song of the four seasons is performed.
The work is created by Chinese dancer/choreographer Zhibo Zhao, a Chinese National First-Rank Dance Artist now based in London for her PhD research. Zhao leads an all-Chinese creative team in making the creation, using the genes of Chinese dance as a means of expression. All in all, this creation is: a creative, critical contemporary dance adapted from ancient Chinese poems; an unprecedented cross-cultural encounter in the name of the four seasons; an unmissable dialogue reflecting on today’s world and modern society.
